As part of building a supportive
and welcoming community of Cyclists and Crew, we need
to be caring and respectful of each other. Our actions
can and will affect others. Our Rules of The
Road is a list of how we should look out for
ourselves and others anytime we’re on the road,
either while training or during the event. You may
be expelled from the Challenge for violating any of
the following rules.
Please click here for
our Community Code Of Conduct, which is a list of general
rules and policies for the event.
01. Helmets. All
Cyclists are required to wear ANSI, Snell, or ATSM
approved helmets. Failure to wear a helmet while pedaling
is cause for immediate dismissal from the event.
02. Your Bicycle. Have
it tuned up before the ride. Make sure your gears and
brakes are in excellent condition.
03. Preparation. Carry
a frame pump, patch kit, extra tube, tire levers, and
a bicycle tool kit or multi-tool. Also, you should
always carry your identification and some cash. Some
people prefer to bring their cellular telephone with
them when out on the road. You should only use your
cellular telephone after coming to a full stop!
04. Visibility. Always
assume that others on the road do not see you. Wear
bright clothing during the daylight hours, especially
when it’s cloudy. Use a light, reflectors, and
reflective clothing during darkness.
05. Passing. Cycling
in a group is much different than by yourself. Unsafe
riding behavior is prohibited. Always ride single file
and to the right leaving room to pass on your left.
If you don’t, you could force another Cyclist
into traffic, causing serious injury or death.
06. Signaling and Communication. Always
use hand signals when turning, stopping, or changing
lanes. Point out all road hazards to Cyclists behind
you. Use your voice, but be aware that you may be riding
with deaf or hard-of-hearing Cyclists.
Please click here for
examples of hand signals.
07. Stopping. Stop
at STOP signs and red lights. Be sure to pull completely
off the road and out of the way of other Cyclists when
stopping. Use the appropriate thumbs-up or thumbs-down
signal when a support vehicle is approaching. Don’t
stop short without alerting other Cyclists in advance
by sounding off and using hand signals.
08. Parked Vehicles. When
passing parked vehicles, always be prepared for opening
doors.
09. Railroad Tracks. Always
slow down when approaching railroad tracks and cross
them at a right angle.
10. Drafting. Never
draft behind other cyclists or vehicles at any time,
regardless of cycling experience. Always leave one
bike length between you and the cyclist in front of
you.
11. Moisture. Allow
extra time to stop when road surfaces are wet.
12. Comfort and Pace. Ride
at a comfortable and steady pace. Be sure to drink
and eat frequently. Always carry water or an electrolyte
replacement drink. Eat before you’re hungry,
and drink before you’re thirsty. Always have
snacks with you.
13. Headphones and Cellular
Telephones. Cyclists are prohibited from
wearing headphones or using cellular telephones while
pedaling. If you must use these devices, do so only
after you’ve come to a full stop.
14. Laws. Participants
must obey all traffic and criminal laws. You must cooperate
at all times with event staff, highway patrol officers,
and local law enforcement. All Cyclists must stay on
the official event route.

California Vehicle Code sections 21200-21212 which
list laws specific to bicycle use.
15. Our Message. We
are the guests of the communities along the route.
Our message of compassion and tolerance will not be
heard if our behavior is seen as offensive.
You cannot do
a kindness too soon because you never know how soon
it will be too late.

Waldo Emerson -
