HIV and AIDS Statistics

As is often heard, knowledge is power. This is especially true when it comes to communicating the effects of HIV and AIDS to our potential donors. Of course, there’s no substitute for the sharing of the personal experience many of us have had with HIV and AIDS, and how it has affected us and those we love. If you don’t have a personal story to tell about HIV and AIDS, you will likely learn a lot from the other members of your NorCal AIDS Challenge community.
Local Statistics

Please consider the following few statistics as related to the inland northern California region:

  • more than 5,000 people are infected with HIV and another 2,000 people are living with AIDS.
  • the number of new infections continues to increase; e.g. 8% more people were infected in 2002 than in 2001.
  • more than half of all new infections are in people under the age of 25 and among communities of color.
  • the average cost of medication and treatment for a person living with AIDS is $20,000 annually.
  • AIDS is still a chronic and fatal disease, which often pushes those living with it into poverty.

Our route was deliberately configured to pass through as much of our beneficiary service area as possible. The following table lists the number of AIDS-related deaths since 1982 for each of the counties on our route. You can see that even the most isolated and rural areas have been impacted by AIDS.
